Application development contest on the Internet of Things

bDialog Semiconductor Hellas in cooperation with the Research Committee of University of Patras invites tgraduate students of 4th and 5th year and postgraduate students in the departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Engineering and Informatics in application development contest on the Internet of Things using Bluetooth Smart protocol.

The applications will be developed on the Dialog platform that will be provided free to those who will register in the competition. Indicative applications are:

  • Applications for smart homes or smart-cities,
  • Applications for improving workplace conditions
  • Wearable devices in medical applications or applications for well-being or sport & fitness

Students may participate individually or in groups up to 3 people.c The applications that will be delivered will be assessed by a specialized committee consisting  of members of the University and Dialog Semiconductors based on the following elements: originality, creativity, contribution to solving the problems of society, presentation. The applications with the three best scores will win the following prizes:

  • EUR 1,500.00 for the first prize
  • EUR 1,000.00 for the second prize
  • EUR 500,00 for the third prize

Presentation of the competition and the regulations will be held in the room I-4 of the University of Patras conference center on 22 March 2016 at 12: 00-14: 00

Rules of the Competition

  • The competition aims to come up with original ideas for IoT applications. Indicative application areas:
    • Applications for smart homes or smart-cities,
    • Applications for improving workplace conditions
    • Wearable devices that address medical applications or applications the well-being or sport & fitness
  • The applications will be developed on the Dialog Bluetooth smart platform that includes the DA14583 processor and should use communication with mobile phone / tablet or PC over Bluetooth smart protocol.
  • 4th or 5th year students and postgraduate students of the Electrical Engineering and Computer Technology or Computer Engineering and Informatics departments can participate in the competition.
  • Only students who will register to the competition and will receive the Dialog platform will be eligible to participate in the competition.
  • Students may participate individually or in groups of up to 3 people who will have to register during the introductory seminar.
  • In order to participate in the final assessment, the students / groups should submit a description of their applications to Dialog until June 1st and they should deliver their work / prototype until September 15th.
  • Applications must be original, meaning that they should not have been submitted to other contests, should not have been published and should not copy existing commercial applications.
  • For the applications that will be submitted in the competition Dialog Semiconductor should receive open source code license based on MIT or BSD standards.
  • The assessment will be done by a specialized committee consisting of members from the University and Dialog Semiconductors.
  • Applications will be evaluated based on the following elements:
    • Originality
    • Inventiveness
    • Contribution on solving problems or improving the lives of people or society
    • Completion percentage
    • Presentation
  • The results of the evaluation will be announced at the closing event. The applications with the three best scores will earn the first three prizes. The funds will be provided through the Research Committee of the University of Patras.
  • The Dialog reserves the right to publish the contest and the results of it as well as the applications that will participate in the competition (in their original form or after processing).
